Life often presents moments that encourage us to reflect on where we began, appreciate how far we have come, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. As I step into a new phase of my professional journey, I feel immense gratitude for the experiences, friendships, and lessons that have shaped me over the past two and a half decades. Every patient I met, every colleague I worked alongside, and every challenge I encountered contributed to making me not only a better oncologist but also a better human being.
After completing my DM from AIIMS, New Delhi, I had the privilege of joining Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in January 2000. At that time, I was filled with enthusiasm and determination to build a meaningful career in oncology. Little did I know that this institution would become my professional home for more than 26 years, offering countless opportunities to learn, grow, and serve patients with dedication and compassion.
The Beginning of a Lifelong Medical Career
Completing my super-specialty training at AIIMS, New Delhi, was one of the defining milestones of my life. The rigorous academic environment and clinical exposure provided me with a strong foundation in oncology while teaching me the importance of evidence-based medicine, ethical practice, and patient-centered care.
Entering professional practice immediately after my training was both exciting and humbling. Medicine constantly evolves, and every patient brings a unique story that extends beyond diagnosis and treatment. Those early years helped me appreciate that successful cancer care depends not only on medical expertise but also on empathy, communication, and trust.
Joining Indraprastha Apollo Hospital
A Dream Opportunity After AIIMS
Joining Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in January 2000 marked the beginning of an extraordinary professional chapter. The hospital offered an environment where clinical excellence, innovation, teamwork, and compassionate care came together. Working with talented colleagues from various specialties allowed me to expand my knowledge while contributing to multidisciplinary cancer care.
Every day presented new challenges and opportunities. Advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment meant continuous learning, while collaboration with experienced professionals enriched my understanding of complex medical conditions. These experiences strengthened my confidence and reaffirmed my commitment to providing the highest standard of care.
More Than Two Decades of Growth
Learning Beyond Medicine
Over the past 26+ years, my journey at Apollo has been filled with unforgettable experiences and invaluable lessons. While oncology remained my area of expertise, I learned that medicine extends far beyond scientific knowledge. Every patient and family taught me resilience, courage, hope, and the importance of compassion during life’s most difficult moments.
The rapid evolution of cancer treatment also meant embracing continuous education. New therapies, advanced technologies, and multidisciplinary approaches transformed oncology over the years, allowing us to provide better outcomes and improved quality of life for countless patients. Being part of this transformation has been one of the greatest privileges of my career.
Building Meaningful Patient Relationships
The strongest memories I carry are not limited to successful treatments or clinical milestones. They are the heartfelt conversations with patients, the smiles after positive reports, the encouragement shared during difficult times, and the trust families placed in me throughout their treatment journey.
These relationships reminded me daily that healing involves much more than medicine. Listening carefully, offering reassurance, and standing beside patients during uncertainty became just as important as prescribing the right treatment. Those human connections remain the most treasured aspect of my professional life.
The Rewards of Oncology
Compassion as the Foundation of Care
Oncology is a field that demands knowledge, resilience, patience, and above all, compassion. Every diagnosis carries emotional weight, making empathy an essential part of patient care. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to witness remarkable stories of strength and perseverance that continue to inspire me.
Treating patients with empathy has been deeply rewarding. Every interaction reinforced the belief that kindness, respect, and honest communication can profoundly influence a patient’s journey. While medicine cures many diseases, compassion often heals the spirit, making every day in oncology meaningful beyond clinical success.
